About the Performers
Richard Scholes
Richard Scholes B.Sc.,B.Ed. is a multi-award winning entertainer, scientist and teacher.
Richard Scholes’ life has been a unique blend of academic life mixed with the performing arts. After completing a Science Degree at the University of Queensland, Richard worked as a microbiologist at that same university for over 10 years.
During that period Richard was performing as well and won Australian Stage Magician of the Year and twice won Qld Entertainer of the Year.
After 12 years of full time work, Richard traded his microscope and moved overseas with his family to study mime, mask and commedia in London and Europe. Richard returned home to work for the Queensland Theatre Company as performer (Snoopy), writer (Polychrome) and director of movement (Animal Farm) in a number of productions before forming his own theatre troupe, the ‘Talking Picture Mime Show’ which successfully staged a number of productions around Australia that included the art forms of mask, mime, magic, shadow theatre, puppetry and black art theatre.
Richard has since been entertaining audiences nationally and internationally on casino stages, television shows and cruise ships with his unique blend of mask, mime, magic and hand shadows for over 20 years and is regarded as one of Australia’s leading exponents in these fields. He has graced the stages as guest artist for legendary performers as diverse as Shirley MacLaine, B.B. King, and Lou Rawls to a 3-month tour of Australia with Billy Connolly as well as performing in three Royal Command Performances, two for the King and Queen of Sweden and one for the Princess of Brunei.
During this period Richard won 2 'Australian MO Awards' for Best Variety Artist in Australia and Best Production Show in Australia.
Richard has made many guest appearances for the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) “Out of the Box” childrens’ festivals, as well as childrens concerts with the Queensland Orchestra on the Lyric and Concert Hall stages.
After living and performing in Sweden and Europe for 2 years with his family, there was yet another twist in Richard’s career. On returning to Australia he completed a Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Queensland majoring in Biology and Multi-Strand Science. Richard taught for a number of years in various high schools on the Gold Coast.
Now Richard is either touring his hit show 'Crazy Science' or performing on stages or cruise ships around the world.
